Concentration, comprehension and action

Concentration, comprehension, and action are the three steps that must be taken in order to understand an event or execute an action. First it is necessary to concentrate on an event, which does not mean identification; it has to do with seeing what the event entails. Then it is necessary to comprehend the event in question, to know about the event, the elements of that event, etc. Then it is necessary to take the pertinent action if it were necessary to take some action.

We meditate to know ourselves and to develop concentration.  We meditate to free our consciousness from the identification with the world around us.  We meditate so we can review our actions, our emotions and our thoughts, to understand the internal states that correspond with our external states.

In a conscious state of being, we would naturally implement the three steps mentioned in the teaching above.  Our five senses would take in the impressions around us and our consciousness would register them in the mind.  Rather than reacting habitually, we would simply be present with the impressions of life that we encounter.  We would not be distracted by thoughts from the past, projections into the future, or comparisons with previous experiences.  We would simply concentrate on what is before us.

Then, through immediate apprehension of the truth, our consciousness would allow us to comprehend the event.  This might include reference to past experiences which our memory can access, but it is our consciousness that synthesises all the information of that moment, including the wisdom of our Being, and the result is comprehension.  We know what we need to know about the event or circumstance in an objective manner.

Finally, the last step is to take pertinent action, as necessary.

This is not a dry, emotionless process.  An example of this may be that a friend has just told us a close relationship has ended. Concentration is to receive the information and the facts of the situation without responding in some conditioned way. If we were to become identified with the situation we might have a tendency to avoid an awkward conversation about the subject, or it might inspire fear about our own relationships, or we might become overwhelmed with empathy so we feel a deep pain.  With conscious concentration we simply see the person – are they faltering emotionally? Do they need help in some way? We listen to their words and observe their body language. Comprehension immediately follows – the consciousness integrates all that is being received with the five senses and activates the faculty of intuition. In that moment we know if we should ask if the person wants to talk about it, make a light hearted joke, give the person a hug, or simply stay silent and listen.

Sometimes when we realise how asleep our consciousness is, we become paralysed due to fear of acting incorrectly. Its important that we continue to live our lives and accept the capacity of consciousness that we have, along with whatever consequences that brings.  Slowly, as we apply ourselves to awakening our free consciousness and freeing our trapped consciousness , we will have more frequent experiences of conscious action.  This will result in a reduction of problems, improve our relationships, and help us to live a more harmonious and healthy life.
